We were fortunate enough to take a day trip from Florence out to the wonderful town of Lucca. It's a simple 1 hour train ride from Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station and is one of those cities that is as classic Italian as they come. There is an entire wall around the old city and so we rented bikes as soon as we got off the train station and rode ourselves silly around the town.
The wall surrounding the city has a bike path that allows you to ride around the entire city, and when you see something you want to visit, you can just take the path back down into the business of it all. We didn’t explore anything outside of the old city walls as most of it is newer and more recently developed. That being said, if you have a a spare day during your next visit to Italy we would highly recommend checking out Lucca as it is totally worth the visit!
Head to piazza anfiteatro, it's an idyllic little square with tons of really great Restaurants and gelato shops lining the road.
Rent bikes! as soon as you get to lucca do yourself a huge favor and rent a bike. you can get one for 10-15 euros and they are a complete game changer, as the entire old city is car-free, and is perfect for biking around.
Lucca makes for a great day trip from florence. it is such a quaint little town. give yourself permission to get lost in the narrow alleyways and dip in and out of as many shops as you can see.
